“Crystal – Between The Lighthouse and The Boat”, in duo with artist Tuan Mu, was developed during an artist’s residence in the Lighthouse of Mazu, Dongju Island, with the lighthouse, its guardian, and the island as tools left to the imagination of our shared creation. During the residence, we picked up drifting objects from the island and tried to build a telescope, to gaze back at the lighthouse, and invited islanders to observe the beacon together with us, through the works made on-site, the moment it lights up.

The “Crystal” project was exhibited at Cape Santiago Lighthouse in Taiwan. Using these salvaged materials, our intention was to echo the exhibition of historical relics in the lighthouse museum and have history presented by the government in the lighthouse exhibition room, contrasted with the artist’s poetic history.

Based on a novel depicting people watching the sea, we have explored the different manifestations of looking at the sea through works of fiction. The name “Crystal” refers to the double image of the lens in the eye of the beholder, and the crystal in the refracting lens of the lighthouse; as for the distance between the lighthouse and the boat, it is the one between traveller and lighthouse keeper, but also the psychological distance of the artists.

《水晶體計劃》由我與另外一位藝術家段沐，在馬祖東莒島燈塔駐村期間延伸而來的創作計畫，以燈塔、守燈人、島嶼作為我們共同創作的想像。駐村時我們一同撿拾了島上的漂流物試著搭建一艘回看燈塔的望遠鏡，邀請島民與我們一同於現地製作的作品上觀看燈塔點燈的時刻。

《水晶體計劃》在台灣的三貂角燈塔（Sandiao Cape Lighthouse）展出，試圖以多媒材回應燈塔歷史文物展覽室的呈列，藝術家的詩性歷史在燈塔展覽室與政府提供的歷史成了一種對照。

該計劃由一部講述海洋觀測員的小說出發，我們試圖從虛構小說中找到對於觀海的各種想像，「水晶體」意指觀者的眼睛與燈塔水晶折射鏡兩種意象，而燈塔與船的距離，是遊子與守燈人之間的距離，亦是藝術家的心理距離。
